Pakistan’s former Prime Minister Imran Khan is sentenced together with his wife to 14 years in prison for corruption.

The court also disqualifies the leading opposition politician from holding public office, just over a week before parliamentary elections in the country.

Khan has previously been banned from standing in the election.

The sentence comes just a day after another court sentenced Khan to ten years in prison for leaking state secrets.

In the latest case, Khan and his wife have been accused of keeping and selling government gifts when the former prime minister was in power.

When Khan was arrested in the capital Islamabad in May last year, it led to violent protests in which nearly 1,000 people were detained and several people were killed.

Former cricket star Khan was ousted in 2022 by a no-confidence vote after falling out with Pakistan’s powerful military leadership.
