Hopes that the method can be tested on humans within two years: “Looks very good”
A new cancer treatment with immunotherapy has proven to be successful, according to Swedish research.
– It is about an antibody that we direct against a certain immune cell, says Sara Mangsbo, professor at Uppsala University.
Researchers at Uppsala University are currently developing a new form of treatment that could in the future save people from severe cancers of the pancreas and lungs. Which The evening paper was the first to report on.
The method is described as a form of “tailored cancer vaccination” where an antibody presents a piece of the tumor to the immune system and has a built-in drug against the specific tumor.
It is thus a way to get the body’s own immune system against the cancer tumor.
– It is about an antibody that we direct against a certain immune cell, and on the antibody itself we have come up with a new way to stick on different synthetically produced pieces, which will be unique for each patient who is treated, says Sara Mangsbo, professor at Uppsala the university, and one of the researchers behind the study.
– In normal cases, these antibodies are just antibodies, i.e. a bus without books, she continues.
“Looks very good”
The researchers now hope that the method can be tested on humans within two years.
– In the security tests we have done so far, this looks very good. But it is still the case that you have to make a larger production of the drug and then take the step into clinical studies.
– So that we are still about two years from the stage where you can first test medicines on humans.
