Almost 60 years ago, an eccentric traveling through time and space saw the world, whom millions took to their hearts: the Doctor from Doctor Who. In 2023, the long-lived science fiction series from Great Britain is celebrating this anniversary with a three-part special, which brings back some stars and features How I Met Your Mother actor Neil Patrick Harris as the villain. A new teaser trailer was released recently.

The teaser trailer shows the old and the new Doctor
One of the secrets to the longevity of the sci-fi series is how it treats its main character. The Time Lord known as the Doctor regenerates periodically. If the performers are tired, there is simply someone new.

Back then, Jodie Whittaker’s 13th Doctor regenerated, but something went wrong and the result was a Doctor who looked suspiciously like Number 10 (David Tennant). We also see the Marvel’s Jessica Jones and Broadchurch star in the teaser trailer, as does Donna Noble (Catherine Tate), the former companion of Tennant’s 10th Doctor.
David Tennant technically plays the 14th Doctor in the special, though he won’t be in that role for long. Because the actual successor to Jodie Whittaker is called Ncuti Gatwa, and is known from the Netflix series Sex Education. Also Gatwa’s 15th Doctor appears in the teaser trailer and is somewhat confused.
Also featured is Neil Patrick Harris, who will make his Doctor Who debut in an as yet undisclosed role.
The three-part Doctor Who Birthday Special is coming in November
The special will consist of three episodes, November 2023 to be broadcast in the UK. Exact dates have not yet been determined.
With Russell T. Davies, an old acquaintance also returns behind the scenes. The TV veteran (Queer as Folk, It’s a Sin) launched the Doctor Who revival in 2005 and was formative for the Tennant years. After a much-criticized decline in quality in recent seasons, he returns to Doctor Who to direct the new season with Ncuti Gatwa.
