With Lords of the Fallen, a new RPG has launched on Steam. But the reviews are already mixed. And according to players, this is mainly because the game did not keep a number of promises. Another problem is once again the weak performance.

With the action RPG “Lords of the Fallen”, the developers at Hexworks wanted to release a new Souls-like game. Tough fights, paired with a dark story and a strong multiplayer component.

On Steam it is currently in first place among the top sellers and in second place in the New and Hot category (as of October 14, 2023).

But the first reviews on Steam are only mixed: As of this writing (as of October 14, 2023), the ratings are only 51% positive out of more than 4,300 reviews.

Poorly implemented multiplayer and performance annoy players

What are the biggest criticisms? On the one hand, many players complain about the mediocre performance of the action RPG. Sometimes the game crashes immediately after starting, others complain about error messages in the middle of the game. Incorrect menus and regular frame drops are also commonplace.

On the other hand, and this is what most players complain about, the multiplayer is anything but well thought out. Because other players only join the session as a “guest” and this leads to a number of problems:

  • If the guest dies, they are not revived, unlike the host, who gets a second chance after death. If the host dies, the game is also over for the guest.
  • There is no shared loot, both players access the same things.
  • A guest cannot unlock achievements. This is only reserved for the host of the game.
  • The game progress is also only saved by the host and not by the guest.

    • Many complain in particular that the “seamless co-op” that the developers advertised is not even present in the game. Because the restrictions for the second player are simply too great at the moment.

    Much praise for the atmosphere and the game design

    Are there also positive voices? Yes, those exist too. Many players praise the design, because the game world consists of two extensive parallel worlds that you have to visit. The dark atmosphere is also praised by many people. The combat system should take some getting used to, but it quickly becomes second nature.

    Overall, many players are of the opinion that the game definitely deserves a chance if the current problems with performance and multiplayer can be addressed.
