New thriller series from Spain wants to compete with Netflix

Netflix is launching the thriller series Bank Under Siege today, which seems to have been made especially for fans of Money Heist. Both formats come from Spain and both formats revolve around an ambitious bank heist with dramatic consequences and complicated motives.

Bank under siege on Netflix: That’s what the historical heist thriller is about

The Money Heist successor goes to one true story from 1981 back. On one day in May, eleven masked men attacked the central bank of Barcelona and took over 200 hostages, who had to fear for their lives for 37 hours. On television, the Spanish public followed the robbery, which was being dealt with by the country’s anti-terrorist unit, which was conducting negotiations.

However, as it turned out, the perpetrators weren’t primarily after the money in the bank. Their concern was rather political and had to do with the attempted coup a few weeks ago after the fall of the fascist Franco regime…

In addition to the obvious Heist connection to Money Heist, there is another connection between the Spanish series. This can be found in the cast, more precisely in Miguel Herrán, María Pedraza and Hovik Keuchkerian, who can be seen in both bank robbery series. Is that already type casting?

Director Daniel Calparsoro (Ultimatum) worked on the historical miniseries with a script by Patxi Amézcua (Operation Marea Negra).

When and where can Bank Under Siege be seen?

The Spanish miniseries Bank Under Siege premieres on Friday November 8, 2024 internationally on Netflix online. Five one-hour episodes were produced.
