New tests can reveal cable break – before they occur

A solution to the problem of the cable break in the Baltic Sea can come from unexpectedly – sea -based wind power.
The company OX2 has tested sensors in connection with the spins, they can discover various attempts at sabotage.
– We hope that these tests will be able to contribute to future coexistence solutions together with the defense, says Anders Wiklund at OX2.

On Sunday, the ship was Vezhen outside Gotland with the anchor pulling behind on the bottom. For the fourth time, an important communication management on the bottom of the Baltic Sea broke down.

– With the right equipment in the right place, you can detect this, not only when it happens, but hopefully before the injury itself has happened, says Anders Wiklund, who is the regional manager for Åland at OX2.

Can detect sounds and movements under water

In a test, the wind power company has mounted six different types of sensors in connection with a windshield. It is about radar, fiber optics, long and short-distance cameras and zonar and hydrophones that detect sounds and movements under water. After the installation, a test was conducted where the company simulated 183 different threats, such as air, drones, underwater vehicles and vessels. During a demonstration of the result, the wind power company told us that in principle all threats were discovered.

– The Armed Forces vessels cannot be found everywhere on the Baltic Sea and it is also the case that the sensors we have on the mainland have limited reach. So if you could share, for example, radar pictures, then you could get a better resolution on ship movements and thus better monitoring of what is happening on the Baltic Sea, says Hans Liwång, professor of defense system at the Swedish Defense College.

Is needed a broad analysis

The Armed Forces, which also participated in the demonstration, have refused an interview. In an e -mail, they write that there are no technical solutions for the risks identified with marine -based wind power. It is also believed that the installation of military systems in civilian energy plants is not exiled, for example in terms of ownership.

– You need to do a broad analysis here over the advantages and disadvantages and assess the total effect of this will be. But I think it may be that the total effect is something positive, but you need to make changes to get there, says Hans Liwång.
