Two of the Swedish Gotland-class submarines underwent a total renovation in 2018-2019. The submarines were lengthened and a lot of the technology was replaced – among other things, the classic periscope has been replaced with a so-called optronic mast with digital cameras.
– Everything is documented and registered and can be post-analyzed in a variety of ways. Previously, you had to analyze your memory image instead, says ship commander Viktor Moberg.
“Fully integrated”
At the same time, the Swedish submarines have now been NATO-integrated in a short time. It is primarily about encrypted communication systems that are in place to communicate with NATO’s submarine command in Northwood, Great Britain.
– We are now fully integrated with NATO. We have worked extremely hard to get this far, a lot of effort has been put into speeding up the process, says Viktor Moberg.
Thomas Wall, head of NATO’s Submarine Command, shared the image:
– The Swedish submarine weapon is fully integrated with NATO. It has happened in a very short time and information now passes in both directions, he says.
“Valuable information”
He states that intelligence information from Swedish submarines has already been able to be sent into the NATO system.
– We have submarines operating in all our areas of responsibility that provide us with valuable information. The Swedish submarines are no exception, we get valuable information from the places where they operate, says Thomas Wall.
