New technology is being tested in Stockholm to reduce speed at schools

Installed cameras with sensors count how many people are moving in an area and speed limits are then adjusted according to the flow of people. When there are many people, the speed on the sign is reduced from today’s 30 km/h to 15 km/h.

Uses the same technology as for electric scooters

The pilot project also includes a test of a so-called geo-fence, better known as geofencing, in which three large transport companies participate. In their vehicles, a software has been installed so that drivers cannot drive faster than the current maximum speed in the test area.

– When the speed signs change to 15 km/h, the geo-controlled vehicles are also regulated down to 15 km/h. It is the same technology that is used for electric scooters in certain areas of the city, says Johanna Salén, traffic planner at the Stockholm City Traffic Office.

During the autumn, the city of Stockholm will evaluate the project together with the transport and technology company and then it will be decided whether the project will continue and whether more places will be equipped in the same way.
