New subject introduced in Swedish schools – only eight teachers qualified

New subject introduced in Swedish schools only eight teachers

From the fall of 2024, Swedish high schools will be able to add Artificial Intelligence (AI) to the students’ schedule. The new subject was introduced at short notice. Jonas Vig who is head of unit at the Norwegian School Administration’s unit for upper secondary school, is convinced of the subject’s importance.

New school subject introduced: “Affects our lives”

– The importance of critical source review increases when the information flow can both be controlled by AI and given AI-generated content, Vig says to News24and continues:

– Social media, trade, infrastructure and contacts with social institutions are examples of areas where AI is used in different ways and thus affects our lives.

Only eight qualified teachers – in the whole of Sweden

However, there is a problem – only eight teachers in the whole of Sweden are authorized to teach the subject, something like P4 West was the first to report. Vig at the Swedish School Administration, on the other hand, is not concerned.

– As the subject is new, it is normal that the number of qualified teachers is low at first. The Swedish National Agency for Education has procured further training so that more teachers can become qualified, and this autumn there is room for a total of 485 students, he tells Nyheter24.

According to him, schools and teachers have been positive about the introduction of the new school subject.

– The Swedish National Agency for Education sees a need to meet technological development in an area that is becoming increasingly important and to make the field of knowledge available to a wide group of students, he tells Nyheter24.
