Storm Elias has caused floods and landslides in the past 24 hours, although not to the same extent as storm Daniel did in early September.
Again, central Greece is the hardest hit, especially around the city of Volos, where many of the more than 140,000 residents have witnessed streets become rivers and basements flooded.
The local authorities have declared a curfew to prevent people from being injured, and a number of villages outside the urban area have been evacuated.
The island of Evia, north of Athens, is also hard hit. There, several villages are said to have been isolated when roads were destroyed.
No people have yet been reported dead in the new storm, unlike the storm in early September that claimed 17 lives. On Wednesday, the government stated that that storm also caused over two billion euros worth of damage.
In addition to the two storms, Greece was hit hard by devastating forest fires a month ago.
— To repeat the obvious: The increased frequency of weather attacks due to climate change is something we must protect ourselves from. The climate crisis is a decisive priority in all our policies, says Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis.
