Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Ali Baqeri attended the extraordinary meeting of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) Foreign Ministers held in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, due to the assassination of Hamas Political Bureau Chairman Ismail Haniyeh.
“A GRAVE VIOLATION OF THE UN CHARTER”
In his speech at the meeting, Baqeri stated that Israel attacked Palestine and the Islamic world with the support it received from Western countries and the US administration, and said that the United Nations (UN) failed to prevent Israel’s aggression. Baqeri said, “Israel’s assassination of Hamas leader Haniyeh, who was our guest in Tehran, has once again shown that the foundation and existence of the Zionist regime is based on terror, murder, aggression, violation of peace, creating insecurity and instability in the region, and genocide. This vile terrorist attack is a clear attack on the national sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Islamic Republic of Iran, a serious threat to regional and international peace and security, and a grave violation of the fundamental principles of international law and the United Nations Charter.”
“WE HAVE NO OTHER CHOICE”
Calling on the UN to take responsibility against Israel, Baqeri said, “We have no choice but to respond to the attacks of the Israeli regime due to the ineffectiveness of the United Nations against the Zionist regime.”
Accusing the US of supporting Israel, Baqeri stated that the US role in the Haniyeh assassination cannot be ignored, saying, “We have warned many times that Israel poses a threat in the region. We have responded to all attacks by the Zionist regime targeting our country in a way that will not cause regional tension.”
Baqeri gave the message that they would respond to Israel to prevent its attacks targeting Iran and said that they would give the necessary response at an appropriate time and place.
