New Star Wars film accomplishes what no other has done

From 2015 to 2019, a new Star Wars film was released in cinemas every year. This has been over since the start of Star Wars 9: The Rise of Skywalker. While the star saga is on Disney+ expanded into several series fans will wait in vain for the next big screen adventure. Now there is a new sign of life.

Three new Star Wars films were announced at Star Wars Celebration 2023. One of them continues the story of Rey Skywalker and brings Daisy Ridley back to the galaxy far, far away. Not much is known about the New Jedi Order film. But it is already clear: It marks a milestone.

For the first time in the franchise’s nearly five-decade history a woman in the director’s chair of a Star Wars film. Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy (Ms. Marvel) will direct the Rey sequel. She tells CNN that it’s high time a female director brought Star Wars to the cinema.

I’m really looking forward to the project because I have the feeling that we will create something very special. We are in the year 2024 and it’s about timethat a woman creates a story in a galaxy far, far away.

Daisy Ridley in Star Wars 8: The Last Jedi

Obaid-Chinoy’s commitment has been confirmed since April 2022, but the director doesn’t have much yet of their Star Wars vision betrayed. She became most specific in an interview with the Hollywood Reporter.

One of the things I love most about working in the Star Wars universe is the opportunity to contribute to a story that… profound influence on countless people around the world has. Throughout my career, I have always been drawn to projects that hold a mirror up to society and reflect our collective experiences and values.

She was particularly inspired by Rey Skywalker’s journey.

The New Jedi Order film takes place 15 years after the events of the sequel trilogy and could star Daisy Ridley more familiar faces return. According to rumors, we can have cautious hopes for a reunion with John Boyega as Finn. Aside from Ridley, no casting is official yet.

While Obaid-Chinoys is the first female director to bring a Star Wars film to the cinema, she has already done so with the series some women directors given. Deborah Chow, Bryce Dallas Howard, Steph Green, Rachel Morrison, Jennifer Getzinger and Geeta Patel have directed various episodes of live-action series such as The Mandalorian, The Book of Boba Fett and Ahsoka in recent years. Chow even directed all six episodes of Obi-Wan Kenobi.

New Jedi Order: When does the Rey film start in cinemas?

Filming for the Rey film is scheduled to begin this year. However, the theatrical release was not yet determined. Lucasfilm and Disney are currently keeping three dates free for upcoming Star Wars films:

  • May 22, 2026
  • December 18, 2026
  • December 17, 2027
  • It would be possible that we would see the founding of the new Jedi Order on one of the two days in 2026 experience. There is also a screen spin-off to The Mandalorian in the works, directed by Dave Filoni, and a Star Wars film by James Mangold that takes us to the origins of the Force and the Jedi.
