    The new year gets off to a snowy start in some places. SMHI has issued several yellow warnings.

    From 11 o’clock on New Year’s Day, there may be heavy snowfall in an area just west of Lake Vänern.

    There can be between 7-15 centimeters of fresh snow and it will be difficult in traffic.

    In the border areas between Svealand and Götaland, east of Vänern, a yellow snow warning applies from 2 p.m. on New Year’s Day and throughout the evening.

    At the same time, a yellow warning for wind has been issued in southernmost Scania. The warning is valid from 8 a.m. on New Year’s Day, and there may be gale-force winds.

    Just before 9:30 p.m. on New Year’s Eve, there was an alarm about an ambulance driven into the middle barrier on the E6 south of Munkedal.

    Sos alarm states for Bohusläningen that an ambulance has also been sent to the scene.

    Several resources from the emergency services are also there.

    At 9:30 p.m., the police announced that the fire was out.

    Seven people from the crew of the tanker Eagle S are suspected of crimes, announced Finnish police.

    All have now been issued with a travel ban.

    The vessel is suspected of being behind the breach on the Estlink 2 electricity cable in the Gulf of Finland on Christmas Day.

    Finnish police write in a press release that they are continuing both with interrogations and underwater investigations.

    A Russian submarine will pass through the Danish Strait on its way north on Tuesday, writes Berlingske.

    – We are aware of it, but it happens at regular intervals, and it is welcome to sail there, says Lars Wulff, duty manager at the Danish Defense Operations Center, to the newspaper.

    During the day, the Russian submarine was joined by ships from the Danish defense. According to Lars Wulff, it is a normal measure to show presence when a country that is not a member of NATO sails through Danish waters.

    According to Berlingske, it is unclear why the Russian submarine is traveling through the Great Belt.

    The strait is the middle of three connecting routes to the Baltic Sea.

    Four homeless people have died in a fire at the central station in the Bulgarian capital, Sofia.

    They died when a train carriage in which they sought shelter during the night to Tuesday caught fire.

    Two more people are being treated in hospital with serious injuries.

    Prosecutors are investigating the cause of the fire, which was quickly extinguished. There are criminal suspicions and two men have been arrested. However, it is unclear what charges are being brought against them.

    Puerto Rico without power on New Year’s Eve

    A power outage has hit almost all of Puerto Rico early on New Year’s Eve morning. 1.3 million households are without electricity in the self-governing US territory, which is noticeably quiet since electrical appliances and air conditioners stopped.

    It may take up to two days to restore power, according to the authorities.

    According to the private electricity company Luma Energy, around 90 percent of its subscribers are without power. The fault is believed to have occurred in an underground cable. An investigation into the cause is ongoing while repair work is carried out.

    Islanders are used to recurring, shorter power outages blamed on a crumbling power grid following Hurricane Maria’s advance in 2017.

    There is a fire in a horse transport on E20 in Skara.

    – According to information, there were no horses in the transport and there are no injuries. It is most inappropriate that it is on such a busy road, says Ola Jakobsson at the rescue service.

    There is a lot of smoke at the scene and the fire service is working to extinguish the fire.

    The road is closed in the northbound direction and will be closed until 15.20 at the earliest.

    A Singapore-flagged and a Japanese-flagged cargo ship collided on the Yangtze River near Shanghai at around 10pm local time on Monday.

    Both ships are still afloat, but the collision caused a large oil spill into the river, reports say local media.

    No people are said to have been seriously injured.

    Set fire to toilet paper – fire in grocery store

    At around 2:30 p.m., a fire broke out in a grocery store in Kungens kurva, south of Stockholm.

    – We have had a fire, an arson it seems, where someone has poured gasoline on toilet paper bales in the store and lit it, says Anders Sessler at the rescue service.

    The fire was quickly extinguished by the sprinkler system. The store has been evacuated and no one is said to have been injured.

    The police are now on the scene to record witness statements and see if there is surveillance footage. The incident is being investigated as arson.
