New shooter on Steam looked like Escape from Tarkov in colorful, is discontinued 2 weeks after the beta, fires employees

Hyenas was supposed to be the new extraction shooter from Creative Assembly and SEGA on Steam. Now, before release, development was stopped due to “low profitability”. This will be accompanied by job cuts at the developer, which will cost some jobs.

What kind of shooter is this?

This is what is happening now with Hyenas: In a statement dated September 28th, SEGA Sammy announced that there would be “structural changes” in the European stations (via segasammy.co.jp).

In this context, development on Hyenas and other, as yet unannounced titles should be discontinued. The Extraction Shooter was actually supposed to appear in 2023, but development has now been stalled.

SEGA cites the “low profitability” of the European region as the reason. Hyenas’ official X account tweeted:

We know that our plans were ambitious and we knew that we would jump head first into competition with the big boys. […] We hope you join us in remembering the action-packed Zero-G mayhem and the tenacious community of players that made us special.

Creative Assembly says jobs will be eliminated

Hyenas’ developer, Creative Assembly, issued its own press release shortly afterwards (via X). It says that the studio will probably have to cut jobs as part of the changes.

The studio does not reveal how many positions are involved or who would be affected. However, Creative Assembly emphasizes that they want to help people whose jobs are in danger find another position in the company, if possible.

The studio is also behind big titles like Total War: Warhammer 3, which recently received great criticism for its latest DLC. In comments on X it is said that this opportunity could have been used to use the vacant positions to improve Total War.

However, Hyenas itself was probably never really able to build up the traction that was desired. At least that’s how MeinMMO author and shooter expert Dariusz Müller sees it:

There are only 2 types of new, successful PvP shooters left and both are crap
