Adnan Syed was sentenced in 2000 to life imprisonment for the murder of his ex-girlfriend, but has always maintained his innocence. The case gained widespread attention in 2014 when the first season of “Serial” questioned some of the evidence prosecutors had used, claiming Syed’s then-lawyer failed to call a key witness who could have provided him with an alibi.
The case was heard in a Maryland appeals court in 2019, but the court did not find the deficiencies in the defense sufficient to warrant a new trial.
But now a judge has decided that Syed’s conviction should be overturned and the now 41-year-old man was released pending a possible new trial.
The new “Serial” episode will be released on September 21.
