Some exciting sci-fi films await us in 2025, from the idiosyncratic Mickey 17 to the mega-blockbuster Avatar: Fire and Ash. However, the most unusual film in this list is another: In Love Me a satellite (!) falls in love with a buoy (!!). The first trailer for the prominent indie project has now been released.

A love story that spans 13 billion, Love Me is set in a post-apocalyptic world where not much of humanity is left. The rubble of skyscrapers rises from the ocean – and a small buoy (Kristen Stewart) sits dreamily in the water and wonders about its existence.
However, the buoy is not alone: a satellite (Steven Yeun) has also survived the collapse of civilization and is eking out an uncertain existence in the infinite expanses of space. By chance, their data streams meet and they fall in love with every record of human experience behind them.

The trailer for Love Me looks a bit like Wall-E, Cloud Atlas and the YouTube film Life in a Day coming together – including an experimental approach in depicting the central relationship. So we see Kristen Stewart (Love Lies Bleeding) and Steven Yeun (Burning) in both live-action and animated form, not to mention their appearances as buoy and satellite.
The film was directed by the directing duo Sam and Andy Zuchero, who made their debut with Love Me. The premiere took place at last year’s Sundance Film Festival, where the film received a very mixed reception. From declarations of love to criticism, everything is therewhich should come as no surprise given the premise.
Tasha Robinson writes it in her review at Polygon:
Love Me feels like it has [der Film] Needed another draft or two of the script to better balance the characters and story and deepen the themes a bit. But it’s a daring, weird debut, this implemented with real style and vision became. It’s a curiosity that fans of similarly strange, highly complex love stories like Forget Me Not! will address.
But that definitely doesn’t sound uninteresting. If you’re looking for a new sci-fi film away from the usual suspects, Love Me could be a real insider tip.

Love Me is released in the USA January 31, 2025 in the cinema, around a year after its premiere at Sundance. Unfortunately, no start date has been set in this country yet.
