The financing of games is an issue that concerns not only developers and publishers. It is also always hotly debated among the players. Now the new sandbox MMORPG Profane has announced that it will be F2P and announced whether pay-to-win is also an option.

What kind of game is this? Profane is a comic-style sandbox MMORPG developed by INSANE studio and released for Windows PC. The first tests were already running in May 2022.

What distinguishes profane? Profane focuses on PvP and crafting. But in addition to the crafting system, Profane should also have a player-driven economy. The weather should also affect the gameplay.

What makes Profane different from other MMORPGs? At the beginning of the game you create a character that should not be tied to anything. Here is a big difference to most MMORPGs: In Profane there should be no classes and no levels. Instead, you learn skills that you can improve over time and advance your character.

Also, there is no story that follows her. However, you can build your own house or even a city. This city can be expanded, customized with skins and attacked by enemies. In general, the world of Profane should change dynamically. This can be done by the player as well as by attacks from NPCs.

“Pay-to-win practices are off the table”

What do we know about funding? As the INSANE development studio announced via Twitter, the MMORPG will be free-to-play at launch. Instead, there should be a shop where you can buy purchasable cosmetic items. But Insane also emphasizes that skins will not only be available through the shop.

“However, skins are not exclusively purchased through the shop. Players can unlock new ones in other ways, like through their reputation with some NPC factions or through some achievements.”

Likewise, the developers are bluntly stating that pay-to-win practices are “off the table” (via Twitter), thus sidestepping a controversial topic. The bosses of Diablo Immortal P2W recently had to face allegations.

Viking inspiration and oriental architectural style

What do the building skins look like? The developers of Profane showed first concept pictures showing possible skins for buildings and cities. The skins shown in the post are inspired by different cultures. For example, one of the images is said to show an architectural style inspired by the Vikings.

Here are the images of the different city designs that Profane shared on Twitter:

When will Profane be released? The MMORPG does not yet have an exact release date. However, there is an official roadmap (via profane.dev) that you can use to track the exact development status.

Where will you be able to play Profane? It is not yet known which platforms the game will be released on, as the developers want to focus on development for now.

However, an FAQ on the game’s website states that it is currently only being developed for Windows PCs and that other platforms (consoles) may be considered in the future. A release on Steam is not yet certain.

What do you say to the pictures of Profane? Do you find skins for buildings and cities interesting or do you think it’s more of a useless gimmick? Write it to us here on MeinMMO in the comments!
