New sanctions package against Russia – 100 new names listed

The exact details of the package are not yet known. But according to information to SVT Nyheter, it will be possible for the EU to ban “exports of high-tech goods to third countries and restrictions against certain companies based in third countries.”

Another 100 people and actors are added to the sanctions lists. Among other things, it concerns people involved in the abduction of Ukrainian children, political leaders and companies that are involved in or are behind the military industry.

The broadcasting ban against media that spread propaganda and false information about the war must also cover companies.

Several countries may be affected

SVT’s European correspondent David Boati says that it is a long-awaited agreement:

“This package took a long time to agree on, it is a new level to start targeting sanctions also against third countries, i.e. countries outside the EU in addition to Russia, which help to circumvent the sanctions.”

The EU Commission has been able to show figures on how countries in Russia’s vicinity have suddenly increased certain trade enormously since the EU began to introduce its sanctions package. Therefore, the EU is tightening its tone against countries that help Russia by acting as intermediaries or reselling materials that the EU has banned for export or import.

On Twitter, Sweden’s Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson (M) writes that an “important agreement was reached today during the Swedish presidency on an eleventh sanctions package against Russia”.

The sanctions are expected to be fully adopted on Friday via a written procedure, according to TT.
