Truck manufacturer Volvo announces the arrival of new generation safety systems. They are intended to avoid different types of collisions with pedestrians and cyclists, who are by far the most vulnerable road users.

Technological advances developed by Volvo prevent both frontal and side collisions. The active side collision prevention system is an evolution of an existing system, to which the active braking function has been added. It uses radar sensors to detect approaching cyclists in blind spots. When this happens, it can warn the driver and, if necessary, automatically brake to avoid colliding with the cyclist as the truck turns towards him.

The second new feature concerns the improvement of its emergency braking system, which uses cameras and various sensors to monitor traffic in front of the truck. If a risk of collision is detected, the driver is warned and the truck automatically brakes to avoid another collision. Now it can also detect pedestrians and cyclists. It is therefore already compliant with European legislation on advanced emergency braking systems which will not come into force until 2028.

Volvo announces that these collision prevention assistance systems will be available in Europe on all trucks in its FH, FM and FMX series from 2025.

Note that another construction site also occupies Volvo, that fully autonomous trucks. The manufacturer recently formed a partnership with Aurora to develop autonomous models boosted by artificial intelligence, foreshadowing the future of freight in the United States.
