The UK is considering trying to get rejected asylum seekers to voluntarily move to Rwanda, in return for them receiving up to £3,000 – close to SEK 40,000 – in compensation.

“We are investigating voluntary relocations to Rwanda for those who do not have the right to be here,” a statement from the Ministry of the Interior reads.

If the proposal goes through, it will be the first time migrants will be paid to leave Britain without returning to their countries of origin, according to The Times.

At the same time, attempts to carry out deportations of migrants to Rwanda in particular continue. That proposal was already presented in 2022 but has stalled due to legal disputes. The Supreme Court has ruled that the deportation of asylum seekers to Rwanda is illegal, which the government is now trying to deal with by getting people to move voluntarily.

According to the Labor opposition, the latest plan indicates that the government’s deportation proposal “has no chance of success”.
