Restaurants must soon be able to answer questions about the origin of the meat – on Saturday the new rules will come into force.
Guests at restaurants should henceforth be able to be notified of the country of origin from beef, pig, sheep, goat and poultry.
New rules on meat at restaurant – from March 1
“The restaurant guest has the right to receive the information, and it can be given orally on request or in writing. The information may be stated directly on menus, but it is also enough with a sign that the guest can ask which country the meat served at the restaurant comes from,” says the Swedish Food Agency’s chief lawyer Elin Häggqvist in a press release.
However, the information about the origin of the meat only needs to be provided where it is served, and thus not in order apps or on the restaurants’ websites.
Restaurants should also not have to respond to the country of origin for sausages or meat that has already been heat -treated, such as pre -fried burgers, purchased from suppliers.
The new regulations were adopted already last fall but will be valid on March 1.
In its press release, the National Food Agency writes that the purpose is for consumers “to be able to choose meat based on knowledge of its origin”.
