New rhino calf at Kolmården: “Diaped within a few hours even if it was wobbly”

The newborn male is the seventh calf for experienced mother Imfolozi. He was born last Saturday, weighs about 60 kilos and is doing well.

– The calf started calving within a few hours and stood up quickly, even if it was a little wobbly, says Cecilia Håkansson, director of animal operations.

Included in international program

The rhinos at Kolmården are part of an international conservation program, which makes the new birth particularly gratifying for the zoo.

– Gradually, he will start to taste grass even if he continues to cry until he is around 1.5 years old, says Cecilia Håkansson.

In Project Ngulia in Kenya, Kolmården and Linköping University have equipped rhinos with trackers.

– The effort has contributed to more than doubling the number of white rhinos in the area, says Anna Andbjer Persson, the zoo’s business area manager for animals, research and education.
