The retro shooter Chop Goblins appeared on Steam 3 weeks before the originally planned release date because apparently the developer’s cat was bored. You can find out what’s behind it on MeinMMO.
What game is it? Chop Goblin is a retro shooter that relies on a retro look. The game was originally supposed to be released on January 2nd, 2023, but it has been available 3 weeks earlier – since December 12th, 2022 – on Steam and costs 3.58 euros.
Chop Goblin is the latest game from David Szymanski, developer of the retro shooter Dusk released in 2018. Szymanski was very successful with Dusk, the shooter was very well received on Steam – 97% of the more than 17,000 Steam are positive.
What did the cat do? As the “Chop Goblin” developer wrote in a post on Twitter on December 12, 2022, his cat “Zamboni” was to blame for the premature release of the shooter. The creatures would probably remind the cat of itself, he added jokingly.
“WTF, I just walked into my office and discovered that Zamboni released Chop Goblins too soon! You have to remind him of yourself.”
However, Szymanski is probably not entirely innocent of the premature release. In a second tweet, the developer added a few minutes later:
“I was bored, so Chop Goblins is available now! (via Twitter).”
Goblin mayhem in different eras
What is Chop Goblin about? You have infiltrated a museum in the basement of which evil creatures called “Chop Goblins” were trapped in a chest.
But they are free again and causing great damage in the game world, which is why your task in the shooter’s campaign is to hunt down the nasty characters.
You not only travel through the city where the museum is located, but also through time and visit Transylvania from 1800, ancient Greece and a not too distant future.
The shooter relies on a comparatively short gameplay and can be played through in a single session. Accordingly, according to the developer, the length of the campaign is limited to 30 to 60 minutes.
In terms of play, Chop Goblin offers 5 different weapons, 5 levels in different time periods, different enemy types as well as awards and leaderboards.
