New requirements for restaurants come into effect in 2025

This means the new rules

From 1 March 2025, restaurants must be able to inform their customers about where the meat they serve comes from. This means that it will be easier for restaurant guests to get information about the country of origin for meat from beef, pork, sheep, goat and poultry. However, the information only needs to be given out at the restaurant, and not in other places such as ordering apps or the restaurant’s own websites, it announced The Swedish Food Agency in a press release.

– The restaurant guest has the right to receive the information, and it can be given orally on request or in writing. The information can appear directly on menus, but it is also enough with a sign that the guest can ask about the country from which the meat served in the restaurant comes from, says Elin Häggqvistchief legal officer at the Swedish Food Agency.

3 out of 4 can imagine paying more for Swedish meat

Many people prefer to eat Swedish meat. According to an opinion poll conducted by Novus on behalf of Swedish Meat 74 percent can imagine paying more for Swedish meat compared to imported meat.

– It should be easy to know where the piece of meat on the plate comes from. Many consumers want to make informed choices about the food they eat, and then good information is a prerequisite, says the Minister for Rural Affairs Peter Kullgren in one press release.
