New requirements for driving licenses are proposed – so you want to change the rules

New requirements for driving licenses are proposed so you

Every year, thousands of Swedes try to get a driver’s license, but with varying degrees of success. According to Sweden’s driving schools, too many people fail the driving test.

– We have calculated that it costs SEK 250 million a year for students who fail their driving test, says the traffic expert Jeanette Jedbäck Hindenburgprincipal at the traffic teacher training in Stockholm and former chairman of STR, to Carup.

Sweden’s traffic schools: “Scandal”

Sweden’s traffic schools want to see a change in the system where there are requirements for secured knowledge – before a driver’s test can even be booked with the Swedish Transport Administration. There are currently no such requirements.

– It’s like cheating people out of money, it’s a scandal that it’s allowed to continue like this, says Jeanette Jedbäck Hindenburg to Carup.

She further believes that the Swedish Transport Administration should encourage people who have failed the driving test to apply to a traffic school for help. But the authority does not agree.

– It is in their agenda, it is not surprising that you need a couple of attempts. According to the statistics, 55 percent pass the test on the first occasion and already on the third 85 percent are approved, says Sofia Lindahlcommunications manager for the Swedish Transport Administration driver test, to Carup.

Jedbäck Hindenburg points out, however, that there are large differences in knowledge between private operators and people who attended a traffic school. And according to statistics from the Swedish Transport Administration that the site has seen, it is clear that the first mentioned fail to a much greater extent.

Number of failed exams in 2024:

  • Private individuals: 59,125
  • Driving school: 19,159

On September 23, the Swedish Transport Agency, on behalf of the government, will present measures to improve the driver training system.

    – We can identify certain groups of driver’s license holders who have greater problems with passing the tests than other groups. Our mission is to propose measures that contribute to prospective drivers being better prepared for the tests and passing them, have Josephine Hallenberginvestigator at the authority, said Sweden’s National Association of Traffic Trainers.
