Hungary’s ruling party Fidesz has nominated a presidential candidate to replace the departed Katalin Novák. The party’s parliamentary group proposes that Tamás Sulyok, who heads the country’s constitutional court, should become the next president. The announcement was made on the X social platform.

Novák resigned after sharp criticism was directed at her after she pardoned a man linked to sex crimes against children.

It was last April that Novák, the first female president of Hungary and with close ties to Prime Minister and fellow party member Viktor Orbán, pardoned the man from a three-year prison sentence.

The man was convicted of pressuring victims to retract their testimonies of sexual abuse in the state orphanage where he worked.
