New Pokémon MMORPG on Steam promises full multiplayer experience

With Chainmonsters, a new MMORPG has been released on Steam that is very reminiscent of Pokémon. You catch, train and fight with monsters and can face PvE and PvP challenges. Highlights are the dungeons and raids that you can only master with other players. If you want, you can even test it right now for free.

What kind of game is this? Chainmonsters wants to merge the concept of Pokémon with MMORPGs, much like Temtem did, which our editor Maik Schneider called “the pinnacle of classic monster-collecting games.”

However, it promises an even greater focus on playing together.

  • You follow a story told through quests. You should be able to complete these quests together with friends.
  • At launch there will be more than 135 different monsters with different types and abilities.
  • The combat system is turn-based, using combo and chain attacks to bring in some more tactics. It can also be fought in 2v2.
  • A dynamic weather system is intended to influence the environment and the existing monsters in the world, but also skills.
  • There will be dungeons, raids, and special boss events that can only be mastered as a group.
  • There will be housing in the form of a separate island. There you can build crafting stations, but also your own houses.
  • Thanks to the blockchain, all monsters, items and cosmetics should really belong to you. These should be able to be traded both in-game and outside of the game.
  • Chainmonsters is slated for release in Early Access on Steam, Android, and iOS in 2023. Crossplay and a console version are planned. The MMORPG becomes Free2Play.

German developer raises 108,000 euros on Kickstarter and launches free demo

Who is developing the game? Chainmonsters is developed by B-Side Games, an indie studio. They were able to win EUR 108,765 for their project via Kickstarter (via Kickstarter). It is interesting that the studio is located in Hamburg.

What is this demo? The demo on Steam is free and anyone can easily download the game. The download is almost 2 GB in size.

In the game there is a first area that you can roam. You can expect 36 chain monsters, several NPCs, a shop to buy replicators (to “catch” the monsters) and the opportunity to fight against other trainers.

The demo version is very rudimentary, but shows in which direction the MMORPG wants to go. There are quests and you can interact with the environment. There are plants to collect or boxes that you can open to find money in them.

The combat system is a bit unusual, because you have to drag the skills onto the opponent if you want to use them. However, this function should be quite useful on a smartphone.

Otherwise, not much can be concluded from the demo. Too many elements are still missing. It’s funny that some texts in the game are in German by default. That should irritate the international audience a bit.

What do you think of Chainmonsters? Do you currently need such a game or is the classic Pokémon enough for you? And what do you think Chainmonsters needs to be really successful?

It was only in August that a Pokémon MMORPG had to stop development because they ran out of money:
