New plan for moose hunting – LRF critically: “Impossible”

The Swedish Environmental Protection Agency’s proposal for new moose management will ensure a certain level of moose tribe throughout the country. In the draft SVT has taken part of, a minimum long -term hunting outlet expressed in moose per 1,000 hectares, which was called “hunting minute” is proposed.

Predators require more moose

The number of moose that can be shot should be decided by the size of the local moose, but also by feed access, and also to what extent there are large predators such as wolf and bear in the area. The density of moose should not be too low in areas with predators. But the proposal receives harsh criticism from LRF.

– What we have now seen from the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency is something completely different from what we have seen before and will make it impossible to reach a balance between landowner interests and hunter interests, and between different social interests, says Palle Borgström, chairman of LRF.

“Reduced carbon dioxide uptake”

Borgström points to the risk of grazing damage that inhibits growth in the forest and thus risks causing a reduced carbon dioxide uptake. According to LRF, the forest could bind an additional 12 million tonnes of carbon dioxide annually if grazing damage decreased according to the cases set by the authorities.

LRF also sees an increased risk of more wildlife accidents if the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency’s proposal becomes a reality.

Moose important in tradition and nature

The Swedish Environmental Protection Agency states in the work on the management plan that the moose is an important resource from a hunting perspective. Hunting is a source of recreation and livelihood and the moose hunt occupies a special position.

But the moose is also important for people’s experiences, the authority believes. Among other things, they refer to SVT’s Slow TV production “The Great Moose Walk”.
