Researchers at Aarhus University are developing a drug that can replace running. The pill takes the body to a metabolic state equivalent to running 10 kilometers at high speed on an empty stomach.
– Man’s eternal search for a “quick fix”, says Doctor Mikael Sandström.
The drug from Denmark, LaKe, is still in the development stage for rat studies and has not yet been tested on humans. It produces a rapid increase in lactate in the body, similar to that which occurs after intense exercise, followed by a more gradual increase in beta-hydroxybutyrate (BHB), a ketone formed in the liver when the body does not have enough glucose.
Together, these appear to reduce the amount of free fatty acids in the blood and suppress appetite, similar to the effects of fasted exercise. In the long term, it can help reduce the risk of heart disease, stroke and type 2 diabetes.
“Started with some fat mice”
It sounds promising, but according to Doctor Mikael Sandström, it is too good to be true.
– Jajamänsan. It started with some fat mice. A substance was found which has since been further developed. It sends signals to the cells that make you burn fat and not sugar. And then you get cancer too, he says in Efter fem.
Has been proven to give a certain effect
According to an article in The Guardian in the future, this medicine may be mainly used on sick, elderly people or who for some other reason cannot run in their usual form. Because even if the pill is said to be able to replace some of the benefits that exercise provides, Doctor Mikael believes that it cannot replace everything.
– You don’t get any psychological effects or enjoyment from it. But it gives a certain effect, a product of it is endurabol. It is a doping preparation that, in the short term, increases the capacity of people. But then you don’t live that long.
– It is an eternal search. You don’t want to do the work – but you want the effect. But there are always side effects, says Doctor Mikael Sandberg.
