And being that step closer to history makes the long digging, shoveling and sifting work of the archaeologists worthwhile. “It really is a dog that gets a bone,” laughs Mattijs, one of the four archaeologists. “It is gigantic fiddling, but finding something makes up for everything.” Not every day brings a spectacular find, but today they are lucky. “You can still see the capillaries running on this piece,” he points to a tiny piece of human bone he just dug out of the ground.
