In just a few years have Armand Duplantis turned into a world star. The 23-year-old has lined up both gold medals and world records at the same time as he is well on his way to becoming the very best pole vaulter of all time.

He recently won another WC gold in a superior way and there is no jumper who can stop “Mondo” right now. He is considered one of Sweden’s best athletes right now and so many Swedes are still curious about the young man with the long poles – and the special name.

His full name is Armand Gustav Duplantis. The surname obviously comes from his American father Greg Duplantis and the first name Armand after a close family friend.

Mondo’s name
But the middle name Gustav comes from his Swedish mother’s side and is after the king Gustav II Adolf who fell in Lützen in 1632. The connection is that it was in November and Mondo was born in November, just four days after the anniversary of the king’s death.

Still, it’s the nickname Mondo that everyone uses to address the pole vault star. It was an Italian friend of the family who came up with the name, which today is world-famous and means precisely “the world” in Italian.
– Dad has Italian friends and world in Italian is mondo. It has been with me since I broke that first world record as a seven-year-old, Armand has explained before.
– Nobody calls me anything else. Even the teachers at school called me that.

Now provides a new picture on social media from the girlfriend Desire Inglander a new page of Duplanti’s name, see below. There it is revealed that she also uses the nickname Mondo instead of Armand, which she shows with a picture of herself and a necklace with the letter M.
