New parking law affects more people – then you can get rid of the car

New parking law affects more people then you can

A law change that came into effect on January 1, 2024 has made it easier to tow away cars that are parked incorrectly or owned by people with “vehicle-related” debts.

Previously, it only applied to car owners who had debts for parking fines of SEK 5,000, but now tax debts are also included in that sum.

The change means that wrongly parked cars that are untaxed, uninsured and subject to a driving ban may be removed from the streets.

When can a car be towed away?

For a vehicle to be moved, it must:

  • The car must be parked incorrectly and have debts of at least SEK 5,000.
  • Debts that are grounds for moving are: Wrong parking fees, congestion tax, road traffic tax, vehicle tax and infrastructure fees.
  • The owner then has one month to collect the car from the parking lot, and he then has to pay for the move and storage.

If the car is not picked up within a month, it is scrapped or sold.
