The foundation announced its newest fund on Jan. 7. It came at the bequest in Peter Evans’ will, reflecting the couple’s lifelong commitment to kindness, generosity, and community.

The Evans, who died in July 2023, shared a deep affection for the Woodstock community, a place they chose to relocate in retirement.

The money will further allow the foundation to present grants to organizations supporting arts, culture and heritage, education, the environment, recreation, health and wellness, and social services. The foundation was established in 2003 and has donated more than $2 million to 115 charitable organizations.

“Cheryle and Peter’s generosity will have a lasting impact with grants supporting Oxford County charities each year,” said Louise Wardrop, executive director of the Oxford Community Foundation. “Their lives were marked by care and dedication, and this fund is a beautiful reflection of their commitment to making the world a better place.”

Peter Evans was born in the UK in December 1948 and immigrated to Canada seven years later. He became a talented graphic artist and photographer for Ontario Hydro, now Hydro One.

Cheryle Evans, born on June 24, 1944, started her Hydro One career at 18 and rose to an executive role in its design construction branch, leading a team of 130 people. After retiring in 1993, the duo moved to Oxford County while wintering in Florida.

Shortly after the donation announcement, members of the community made their feelings known on the foundation’s social media pages.

“A wonderful Legacy! Oxford Community Foundation continues to grow to the benefit of the community,” commented John Lessif via Facebook.

“What a fabulous gesture and legacy to leave,” added Bette Rowe.
