In Tshopo, in the DRC, a land dispute which degenerated into an intercommunity conflict has resumed after a lull at the end of the year. This conflict has already caused more than 500 deaths since February 2023. MSF is warning of the humanitarian situation.

The tension between the Mbolé and the Lenga had subsided at the end of 2023, but since the beginning of January 2024, clashes have resumed, leading to new population displacements. A situation which worries the NGO Médecins sans frontières, which deployed a mission on site, explains Alira Halidou, head of mission of Médecins sans frontières in the DRC, at the microphone of Paulina Zidi from the Africa editorial team.

After approximately two months of calm, hostilities have resumed since January 2024. Huts have been set on fire again with new victims and injuries.

The needs are summarized in terms of shelter, access to drinking water and sanitation.

We know that these people find themselves in a situation of total precariousness, hence, for us, the interest in greater mobilization. It must be said that today, access to basic social care remains completely limited. Doctors Without Borders calls for more attention and involvement in the silent drama that people have been experiencing in this province for almost a year. It is a cry of alarm. »

A land problem would be at the origin of these clashes.
