Fans of hard-boiled warhorses know actor Alan Ritchson best as military policeman Jack Reacher from Reacher. But while he tends to knock the blood out of his opponents in the Amazon series, in the Netflix film Ordinary Angels he is after another bodily fluid: your tears.

1994 in the US state of Kentucky: The successful hair salon operator Sharon (Hilary Swank) is deeply moved after she learns about the fate of the Schmitt family, whom she does not know. Five-year-old Michelle (Emily Mitchell) has She just lost her mother and urgently needs a liver transplant. To help father Ed (Ritchson), who is drowning in hospital bills, Sharon quickly organizes a 24-hour haircutting marathon to raise money in the community.
Sharon, who struggles with a drinking problem herself that she can’t fully admit to herself, is looking for a new meaning in life. This goes so far that she even tries to reconcile the Schmitt family with an estranged family member. But her addiction problem cannot be hidden forever.
Rare A+ CinemaScore rating for Ordinary Angels
Ordinary Angels was released as a regular film in the USA in February 2024 before being released here via Netflix. As our sister site Filmstarts reported back then, the film earned a rare A+ rating from CinemaScore. With this form of evaluation, viewers in the cinema fill out a card with grades.
The Metacritic score of the review, however, is only 57, while the RottenTomatos Tomatometer score is 84 percent. The reaction from the Moviepilot community has so far been lukewarm with a rating of 6.6.
