With Christian Bale, director Scott Cooper has had the in the past strong films Eye for an Eye and Enemies – Hostiles rotated. Now his latest work, The Memorable Case of Mr. Poe, is out direct to Netflix and has the popular character actor back on board.
The originally more elegantly titled The Pale Blue Eye made it into the top 10 of the Netflix charts, but this is probably more due to streaming attempts that have started than really ended. Because the memorable case of Mr. Poe is already one of the most frustrating sleeping pills of 2023.

The German title of the Netflix thriller with Christian Bale is the biggest sham
The story of Cooper’s new film takes place in 1830, where a murder occurs at a cadet school in West Point, which is not the only one. Veteran police officer Augustus Landor (Bale) is assigned to investigate a case in cut the heart out of the victim’s chest would. There is also a certain young Edgar Allan Poe (Harry Melling) at the cadet school, who prefers to devote himself to his morbid texts and eventually becomes a suspect himself.
What initially sounds like an exciting mix of scary crime thriller and historical backgrounds, including macabre secrets, will be incredibly tiring. Cooper has made The Memorable Case of Mr. Poe a longtime passion, but his passion for the story never translates into the film itself.
Instead, Bale sleepwalks through the plot in the lead role, while Cooper’s staging, despite atmospherically appealing approaches never tension or dynamic lets arise.
A Netflix film like a far too long crime scene episode
The nearly 130 minutes of The Memorable Case of Mr. Poe, with hardly anything memorable, work like an endless crime scene episode. At least 100 minutes of the Netflix film is a deadly test of patience, in which the series of murders is only casually enriched with occult secrets in order to take at least some of the formulaic monotony out of the crime story told in slow motion.
Only towards the end does The Memorable Case of Mr. Poe pick up momentum with an excessive finale. But the finale isn’t one at all and the plot ripples along again into one constructed resolutionwhich finally buries the Netflix film under itself.
