New Netflix action hit beats The Gray Man Is Carter

Carter has become a hit on Netflix, even beating the multi-million dollar hit The Gray Man in the top ten. The first trailer predicted a breathless hunt for action fans. Is the spectacle worth it?

Carter on Netflix: An action “triumph” but “aggressively stupid”

The film by Korean director Byung-gil Jung (Confession of Murder) has a unique visual style, and almost all reviews agree on that. The story about the agent Carter (Joo Won), who finds himself between the fronts of divided Korea with despots, gangsters, the CIA and zombie-like infected has to grapple with is a rush of images.

Chases, mass brawls or parachute jumps are combined digitally into a planned sequence, with the camera whirling restlessly around the bloody events. The Verge is enthusiastic about the result “A triumph of filmmaking“.

But opinions differ, especially when it comes to the extraordinary staging. “Not a single scene is up to par‘ writes the Indian Express on the “aggressively stupid” Movie, whose staging is not improved by a plot stolen from Children of Men.

The film also divided audiences on IMDb. The verdict on the camera work moves between “unique” and “unbearable“, many also criticize the “hardly existing” or “unrealistic“Story.

Carter is something above all else for absolute action fans with a penchant for unique camera choreographies. If you like your fight scenes to be quieter or if you want in-depth character drawings, you’re probably wrong here.
