The developer studio Creative Assembly is actually known for the strategy epics of Total War. But now they bring you a crazy shooter: Hyenas (PS4, PS5, Xbox, PC, Switch). MeinMMO briefly introduces the title and shows how you have a chance of participating in the alpha on Steam.
What is Hyenas? The first person shooter uses current trends in the genre and is a further development of the extraction shooter – you start a match, fight NPCs and other players, collect loot and have to leave the field alive. Everything is playable in co-op.
The graphics exude Borderlands vibes with a cell shading-like look, and the setting couldn’t be further from Escape from Tarkov, the first major extraction shooter.
Because you are on a raid and raid space stations of wealthy people to steal old merchandise that is worth a lot of money. Accordingly, there are pop culture references around every corner.
There is no official gameplay for the game yet. However, MeinMMO was able to see a match at gamescom – you can find our report on Hyenas here.
The most important key data:
Below we show you how you have a chance at an Alpha participation. You can check out the Hyenas announcement trailer here:
Hyenas: That’s how you join the Alpha
The shooter has announced that it will open the servers for alpha testing over a total of four weekends. Although Hyenas will also be coming to consoles when it is fully released, alpha testing will only run on Steam on the following dates:
The English website for registration can be found here: playhyenas.com.
You must be at least 18 years old to participate, you need a Steam account and an account with Creative Assembly. You also have to link the two accounts – you can do this when registering for the alpha test.
After that, you’ll need to answer a few questions about your gambling habits and agree to an NDA. This is a non-disclosure clause of sorts, and by doing so you agree not to release any gameplay from the alpha.
Then you are registered for the alpha test. When or if you will receive an invitation to the test cannot be said with certainty.
Personal impression author: At gamescom I was able to see a match prepared by Hyenas and saw an interesting new take on the extraction shooters.
Above all because of the hero mechanics – the characters all have individual skills that can be expanded and changed over time. This allows for many different tactics, which can be made even more insane by the zero-gravity mechanics.
In addition, there can be a showdown at the end of a match and the player squads go at each other.
This brings a touch of Battle Royale into play, although the presenting developer did not want to accept a comparison with a Battle Royale at gamescom. The focus is on escaping with the loot, not fighting the other teams.
If you like to play shooters with different classes/abilities for your characters and find the principle of extraction shooters exciting, then Hyenas is definitely worth a look.
