New mother of twelve – at 58 years old

29 years ago, Anna Hammarström and her husband had their first children, which are triplets, and since then they have had children every four to five years.

– Children are so much fun. Of course I’m satisfied, but that doesn’t mean you don’t want more, she says.

“Care is discriminatory”

Anna and her husband, who are older than she is, often get questions about being older parents.

– It is the individual couple or woman who must take a position on that. We have had children because we think we can handle it.

The mother of twelve is critical of today’s fertility care, which she thinks should be based on what the individual wants.

– The age limits for women when it comes to fertility care are discriminatory, she says.

Went to China to give birth

When Anna Hammarström was about to give birth to her latest daughter Rosa, she suffered a serious complication in the middle of her pregnancy. The placenta had grown into the uterine wall. The risk was therefore great that Anna would lose her uterus and the operation she needed was not offered in Sweden.

– The uterus is part of me as a woman, it’s part of my organs and I don’t want to remove anything if it’s not necessary, she says.

After Googling day and night, Anna decided to go to China and undergo surgery there because they have largely succeeded in saving women’s wombs. They also managed to do that with Anna’s womb and she will be able to have more children if she wants.

– We received a fantastic reception and I was able to go home on the third day after the operation.

Wants to give advice to other older parents

Anna is currently writing a book with advice and tips based on the experience she gained from taking care of twelve children. In the future, she also dreams of starting a clinic where you can receive women who have no place in the Swedish system.

– Since it became known that we had children at this age, I receive many emails and text messages from women who wonder how they should behave, where they should turn, what opportunities there are. I think there is a great deal of ignorance in healthcare, says Anna Hammarström.
