New MMORPG from Germany does without grind – this is how you take part in the 2nd alpha

Twin Drums, an indie studio from Berlin, is currently working on The Wagadu Chronicles, a new MMORPG for PC and Mac. The project relies fully on the role-playing factor of the genre and impresses with a unique setting.

What kind of game is this? As early as 2022, The Wagadu Chronicles announced itself as an MMORPG with a focus on RPG, not on grind. The game is based on Dungeons & Dragons, one of the most famous and largest role-playing games in the world.

As in D&D, you create your own character, but don’t choose a race here, but an “ancestral line”. This determines your origin and roughly your task in this world. You should be able to fully slip into the role you have chosen and created:

  • There is no focus on gear with better stats or grind
  • There are also no classes, but pre-made skills
  • The story plays a bigger role
  • In groups you should be able to interact with each other using a “dialogue mode”.
  • Questions about the game are asked in “off-world lobbies” so as not to destroy the immersion
  • The Wagadu Chronicles bills itself as an Afro-Fantasy and appears to be set in a fantasy version of Africa. Check out the gameplay and world in the alpha trailer here:

Alpha 2 is starting “soon” – Participation is very easy

When does the alpha start? The developers’ latest tweet states that the 2nd alpha will start “soon”. There is no specific date yet.

Shortly before the announcement, however, new information was released about the game, including some details about the magic system. Many spells seem to be based on well-known templates from Dungeons & Dragons.

The game is based on a set of rules anyway, which should be able to be combined with the 5th edition of D&D. This even appears as a separate Pen & Paper.

How can I participate? Unlike the first alpha of The Wagadu Chronicles, you don’t have to have paid €140 in kickstart. Instead, it should be enough if you simply subscribe to the newsletter:

You then have the chance to be invited to the alpha test and also receive a 300-page lore book as a PDF. This serves as the basis for both the MMORPG and the associated Pen & Paper.

We don’t know yet whether the game will later be Free2Play, Buy2Play or with a subscription model. A specific release date is still pending. An accompanying book is to be published in autumn 2022.
