A new important discovery about prostate cancer has been made by researchers at Umeå University. It means that it will be faster and easier to find out which patients have an aggressive cancer – and which do not. The discovery is about the researchers seeing how different proteins in cancer can show how fast the disease can develop.
Today, there are no specific methods to determine early in the course of the disease, in a simple way, how aggressive a prostate cancer is.
– That is why we think our finding is important, says Maréne Landström, chief physician and professor at Umeå University.
The finding will result in new methods and tests, which can be ready for use in hospitals in two to three years. The researchers also believe that there are some cancers in addition to prostate cancer that the method can be useful for.
