The Swedish Transport Agency has drawn up a proposal to improve driver training in Sweden, which was submitted to the government today.
The proposals are the result of an investigation appointed by the government after the number of failed driver’s license tests increased significantly.
More specifically, the proposal deals with the training for driver’s license qualification B, which is the driver’s license you need to drive a passenger car.
Two compulsory driving lessons
The big news in the Swedish Transport Agency’s proposal is that they want to introduce a requirement for what they call two mandatory guidance sessions.
In practice, this means that everyone who is training to obtain a B driving license must take two driving lessons, regardless of whether the license is taken privately or at a driving school.

– The idea of the guidance is that prospective drivers should get a good picture of where in the training process they are, and what is required further to be sufficiently prepared to complete the tests, says Josephine Hallenberginvestigator at the Swedish Transport Agency in a press release.
As the cost of the various elements of the driver’s license training falls on the student, the risk is that this means that it will be more expensive to get a driver’s license in the future.

Want to ban frequent retests
The Swedish Transport Agency also proposes, among other things, that the introductory training be abolished, and that a new supervisor training be introduced as compensation.
They also want to extend the validity period of a passed knowledge test to 12 months, and prohibit too frequent retests. If you fail, you will not be able to take another test until two weeks later.
The point of this is to give students time to prepare properly for the next exam after failing.
