Since the beginning of the 21st century, the opportunities to buy drugs and other illegal substances over the Internet have increased. A large part of this illegal trade is transported by mail. And the Police Agency estimates that up to one million shipments of narcotics are sent through the mail each year, according to it proposition which is behind the bill.
– Illegal shipments are common and it is a concern, says Jonas Eronen, the police’s spokesperson for the Mitt region.

But from January 2, 2023, the provisions in the Postal Act will change. The bill means that employees in postal operations are given the opportunity to break their duty of confidentiality to the police and customs on their own initiative, in case of suspicion of a crime that could result in imprisonment.
Farzana Nazir, who runs a shop in Uppsala, together with her husband, thinks that the change in the law is good.
– If I suspect anything in the future, I will contact the police.
Procedures in case of suspicion
Postnord is the largest among the 30 companies licensed to carry out domestic letter delivery in the country and has worked out routines for its employees and agents in the event of suspicion of crime.
