This is the meaning of a new law presented by the Spanish government in parliament, with the aim of reducing food waste in the country.
Among the measures businesses may be forced to take is to lower the prices of goods that are approaching the best-before date and donate unsold food to food banks and aid organizations. If the best before date has passed, the food should be used as feed or in industry.
Companies that do not comply with the law can expect fines of between the equivalent of SEK 20,000 and 600,000, but Minister of Food and Agriculture Luis Planas says that it is more important for the public to open their eyes to food waste than for companies to be fined.
Planas further says that the law, which is partly inspired by similar French and Italian laws, will help Spain reduce food waste, which in recent years has been 1,400 tonnes of food per year, or 31 kilos per person.
