The Swedish Food Agency wants to introduce a new requirement for Sweden’s restaurants. The proposal has been sent all the way to the EU Commission and only when the other EU countries have approved it can the proposal be implemented.
The Swedish Food Agency itself hopes that the requirement will pass before autumn 2024.

The new proposal – it means the Swedish Food Agency’s requirements
The authority published a press release this week proposing a new rule. The proposal means that all restaurants must report which country the meat served comes from.
This applies above all to meat from beef, pork, sheep, goat and poultry, writes the authority.
The reason is that the Swedish Food Agency wants to give the customer the opportunity to choose between different countries of origin when they eat meat in a restaurant.
Restaurants already receive this information from suppliers today. The difference will be that that information must be passed on to the restaurant guests.

This is how restaurant guests must be informed
– The restaurant guest has the right to receive the information, and it can be given orally on request or in writing, says Elin Häggqvistchief legal officer at the Swedish Food Agency, i the press release.
– The information can appear directly on menus, but it is also enough with a sign that the guest can ask about which country the meat served at the restaurant comes from.
At the same time as the proposal is being processed in the EU Commission, the Swedish Food Agency is working to communicate the proposal to various companies in the industry.
