New law can give drunk tourists SEK 17000 in fines

The Spanish island group of the Balearics has had enough of alcohol-impaired tourists. The island group includes, among others, Cabrera, Formentera, Ibiza, Menorca and Mallorca.

Already in 2020, the government enacted a law in an attempt to reduce the number of drunk tourists out on the streets and on the coast. A ban was then introduced on the serving of alcohol after 9.30pm.

Now the same law is being tightened and if you are caught drinking alcohol in certain areas it can cost you dearly, which the BBC was the first to report on.

The law will be implemented on Saturday, May 11.

The areas that the law applies to include Playa de Palma, Magaluf in Mallorca and Sant Antoni de Portmany in Ibiza.

The government is cracking down on party boats which, after the new law comes into effect, will not be able to be closer than within a radius of approximately 1.8 kilometers from these areas. It is also not permitted to drop off or pick up passengers within the same areas.

This is how much drinking can cost you on holiday

If you drink alcohol on the street in these areas, you may have to pay between 500 and 1,500 euros in fines, which roughly corresponds to between 5,835 and 17,506 kroner.

The number of fines a tourist receives will be tallied by authorities in these areas and passed on to the tourists’ respective home embassies.

Several local residents have complained and claimed that the new law could harm the local business community, write BBC.
