New information about the next Pirates of the Caribbean film probably destroys Johnny Depp’s return for good

New information about the next Pirates of the Caribbean film

The Pirates of the Caribbean series is in shambles. Captain Jack Sparrow’s last screen outing was seven (!) years ago. By Hollywood standards, that’s an eternity. No studio would franchise let it lie fallow for so long, if there wasn’t a lot of chaos behind the scenes. But here we are.

Is Pirates of the Caribbean 6 coming with Johnny Depp? Or maybe a spin-off with Barbie star Margot Robbie in the lead role? In the past few months there have been numerous rumors, how the fantasy adventure cosmos could be expanded. Recently there was even talk of a new Pirates film with Ayo Edebiri from The Bear.

Never again Johnny Depp as Jack Sparrow? The next Pirates of the Caribbean film will be a reboot

What is the current state of affairs? That’s what Comic Book wanted to know from Jerry Bruckheimer, who created the series accompanied as a producer since the first part. Comic Book has also inquired about the next Top Gun film starring Tom Cruise. Bruckheimer’s answer is unexpected.

Bruckheimer says:

[…] You never know how [die Filme] getting together. You just don’t know. Because with Top Gun you have an actor who is iconic and brilliant. And how many films [Tom Cruise] before Top Gun [3] I can’t say. But we will reboot Piratesand that’s easier to do because you don’t have to wait for certain actors.

Johnny Depp as Jack Sparrow in Pirates of the Caribbean

Stuck in Bruckheimer’s last sentence two surprising pieces of information. First: The next Pirates of the Caribbean film will be a reboot. And secondly: Apparently, in his eyes, the series is no longer (anymore?) dependent on one star. That is definitely an exciting statement. Because so far, Pirates of the Caribbean has had one clear star: Johnny Depp.

After years in development hell, Pirates of the Caribbean is apparently ready to let go of the past

Depp’s involvement in further Pirates films has been in limbo for years due to various controversies. But that Bruckheimer now says Pirates of the Caribbean can “without specific actors” This was not something that could be foreseen in the past. So far it’s been a turn focused on Depp’s Jack Sparrowwhile other characters like Elizabeth Swann (Keira Knightley) and Will Turner (Orlando Bloom) rotated.

Bruckheimer’s statement tells us a lot about the status Depp currently has in Hollywood. Top Gun 3 without Tom Cruise is unthinkable. Pirates of the Caribbean, on the other hand, seems to have reached a point where the franchise can reinvent. After years in development hell, a reboot feels like a long-overdue stroke of freedom.
