New government: who will be the 10 to 15 ministers appointed by Attal?

New government who will be the 10 to 15 ministers

The names of the ministers forming the tight government of Gabriel Attal could be revealed this Thursday, January 11, while those of the delegated ministers and secretaries of state would be announced later. Who could stay or on the contrary leave?

Work discussions have continued between Gabriel Attal and Emmanuel since the appointment of the Prime Minister. The time would be for final adjustments this Thursday, January 11 and the announcement of the new government could occur in the afternoon, according to several media sources close to the executive. But we should not expect to know the complete composition of the ministerial team, only full ministers, whose number would be between 10 and 15, could be appointed. Approximately as many delegate ministers and state secretaries could be made official later.

The objective of the Elysée and Matignon to form a tight government is confirmed and a team made up of 10 to 15 ministers could be unveiled this Thursday. The transfers of power in the main ministries could follow between the end of the day and tomorrow before the Council of Ministers which would be rescheduled for this Friday.

The Prime Minister could therefore have ticked the box for a reduced government. What about the other requirements such as parity and respect for the balance between the forces of the majority, for which the MoDem and Horizons are campaigning? According to the latest rumors of the reshuffle, the new government could be consistent with these two objectives or at least come close to them.

Which minister is leaving?

  • Agnès Firmin Le Bodo : Aurélien Rousseau’s replacement at the Ministry of Health has little chance of being retained, because she is under investigation for gifts improperly received in the context of her role as pharmacist. A new Minister of Health – the seventh since the Macron era – is therefore expected at the turning point for this sector which has been presented as a priority for years. The choice seems difficult, but it could fall on a person combining mastery and knowledge of the medical world and its difficulties, political strength and charisma to establish himself at the head of the ministry. The names of Frédéric Valletoux and Arnaud Robinet, member of Horizons, are mentioned to take over as during the previous reshuffle.
  • Catherine Colonna : the Minister of Foreign Affairs is rumored to be leaving and this portfolio coveted by Darmanin, and possibly Le Maire, should not go to either of them. Few names are circulating to succeed Catherine Colonna in this ministry which can be both an incommensurable promotion or one of the best consolation prizes for a minister dismissed elsewhere.
  • Clement Beaune : the Minister of Transport and leader of the left wing revolt against the immigration law could be in an ejection seat, but the rest of the rebels would no longer be promised at the start Emmanuel Macron not wishing to indulge in a vendetta. The departure of the minister would, however, serve as an example.
  • Sylvie Retailleau : being one of those to have opposed the immigration law, the Minister of Higher Education could leave. This departure would, however, be less linked to the immigration episode than to the possibility of seeing this portfolio absorbed by the Ministry of National Education.
  • Olivier Dussopt : the case of the Minister of Labor raises questions. The man is scheduled to go to trial in his favoritism trial on Jan. 17, and a conviction would force him out of government. The Elysée and Matignon could decide to take the lead and avoid the risk of a new appointment in just a few days. The Parisian adds that the minister would not be part of Gabriel Attal’s plan.
  • Olivier Véran : the spokesperson, although discreet during this reshuffle, may not be reappointed to his post. Rumors about his departure are rare, but hypotheses of a new minister appointed there are growing.

Who could or should stay in government?

  • Gerald Darmanin : there is little doubt about the retention of the Minister of the Interior. Gérald Darmanin self-reappointed after hearing of his stay in government and the information seems to have been confirmed during the Prime Minister’s trip alongside the “first cop of France” to a police station on Wednesday January 10.
  • Bruno Le Maire : the fate of the Minister of the Economy would have been uncertain until recently. After being described in the hot seat, Bruno Le Maire finally got wind of his stay at Bercy. The man could even see his domain extended to an expanded ministry, even including that of Energy currently headed by Agnès Pannier-Runacher according to certain rumors in the corridors reported by Politico.
  • Rima Abdul-Malal : the Minister of Culture presented on departure for days after her opposition to the immigration law, but especially after her reaction to the Gérard Depardieu affair, from whom she wanted to withdraw the Legion of Honor, could finally have saved her place in government according to The Parisian.
  • Roland Lescure : the Minister of Industry, described as close to Alexis Kohler, Emmanuel Macron’s right-hand man, and also a member of the rebellious group could also stay in the government.
  • The ministers from the MoDem that his Marc Fesneau (Agriculture), Jean-Noel Barrot (Digital), Philippe Vigier (Overseas) and Sarah El Hairy (Biodiversity) do not seem to risk their place in government according to Politico. And if a change of ministry would not be either, it is not completely excluded.

Who at National Education?

Appointed to Matignon, Gabriel Attal leaves vacant his place as Minister of National Education for which he worked for five months. If the Prime Minister said “took the cause of school to Matignon”, he will only be able to keep an eye on the ministry which has become one of Emmanuel Macron’s reserved areas. To take over, two names come back insistently: that of Stanislas Guérini first, currently in charge of the Civil Service, and that of Aurore Bergé, the Minister of Solidarity and Families.
