According to Israel, the airstrikes are a response to rocket fire that hit southern Israel earlier in the morning. No Palestinian group has claimed responsibility for the bombing, but Israel has blamed Hamas.
The Israeli military also states that the rocket fire on Israel was stopped by the air force.
Violence in the region has also escalated in recent months.
Palestinian perpetrators have killed about 20 Israelis in various acts on Israeli territory and in military raids in the West Bank, even more Palestinians have been killed, including suspected perpetrators and fighters, but also many civilians.
Tensions escalated when Palestinian-American journalist Shireen Abu Akleh was shot dead on May 11. Witnesses and investigations indicate that she was killed by shots fired by Israeli soldiers, but this is denied by Israel.
