Familiar and new co-op gameplay in Pokémon Crimson and Crimson

What might look familiar to you? Crimson and Crimson return to multiplayer content you may already be familiar with from Generation 8. These include raids (raids) against particularly large Pokémon and friendly or competitive battles against other human players.

However, the raids are slightly adjusted, since a kind of real-time system is used here now. Everyone uses their attacks or abilities when they can, with speed stats dictating who attacks and in what order.

What co-op elements are new? What is new, for example, is that you can now invite up to three other players to your session or world and then four of you can run through the new game world.

However, the multiplayer mode remains very flexible. Because there can be four of you in a game world, but you can pursue completely different tasks: while one player continues the story, another player can catch new pocket monsters. A third user goes shopping and stocks up on new clothes.

Eurogamer explains in its preview that they didn’t reach a maximum distance between players in their session. This is a little reminiscent of Genshin Impact, where you can also be at the other end of the map.

What can you do together?

  • You can explore the large, open game world together and discover secrets and easter eggs.
  • You can also take photos, go shopping together and do many social aspects together.
  • You can also do certain events such as Koraidon races in multiplayer.
  • Which elements do not go in co-op yet?

  • According to previews, you cannot complete trainer or arena battles together with your friends.
  • You also have to do story missions and the corresponding progress on your own.
  • On top of that, you have to do normal battles against wild Pokémon on your own and you can’t get any support from your friends.
  • If you were hoping to fight Pokémon together or fight other battles like in Monster Hunter World, then you might be disappointed. Those who hoped to enjoy the story with their friends should also be disappointed.

Nevertheless, some testers explain in their preview that the new features are useful and good improvements.

Anyone who has played Sword, Shield or Arceus will recognize many things

What else could you see in the gameplay? Both the graphic style and the gameplay are surprisingly reminiscent of previous games such as Sword, Shield or the Arceus offshoot:

  • Crimson and purple are based on an open game world that you can travel freely and attack wild monsters directly on the map. This is strongly reminiscent of Arceus, which already relied on this more open design.
  • You can now run some fights automatically. So you no longer have to do every fight yourself.
  • The graphic style is again strongly reminiscent of sword and shield, but has received a few design adjustments.
  • But there are also a few small but fine innovations. Some testers explain in their preview that there are no real Pokecenters anymore. They now look more like gas stations or a kiosk, so you can now heal your Pokémon up again or go shopping without a door (and loading screen). This makes the world look much more dynamic without the constant loading screens.
